山陽新幹線で携帯電話が使えなかった区間を対象としたエリア化工事が進み、10/07から、岡山～福山間の16のトンネルでサービスが開始されました。NTTドコモ、KDDI、ソフトバンクモバイルの3社による携帯電話による通話とデータ通信が可能になったそうです。
東海道新幹線の東京～新大阪間と山陽新幹線の新大阪～岡山間ではすでに工事が完了しているため、今回の工事完了により東京から福山までの区間で携帯電話が途切れず利用できるようになりました。福山から先、三原までの区間も、来年(2012年)春頃に同様のサービス開始を予定しているとのこと。
なお、N700系車内での無線LANによるインターネット接続は、携帯電話とは別のしくみ(漏洩同軸ケーブル(LCX))を利用しているため、ひきつづき東京～新大阪間でのサービス提供となります。
The service area for verbal and data communications on mobile phones in Shinkansen tunnels was expanded on October 7, 2011. The new westmost point is Fukuyama. The services by NTT DoCoMo, KDDI and Softbank Mobile will be available there.
The antenna installation works for tunnels were previously completed on whole of Tokaido Shinkansen and a part of Sanyo-Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama. With this service area expansion, uninterrupted mobile communications will be available between Tokyo and Fukuyama. JR West said the area will be stretched to Mihara in the next spring.
The Series N700 car's in-vehicle internet access service through wireless LAN is restricted within Tokaido Shinkansen between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, because its communication method and required equipments are different from the antennas for the mobile comunications.
