8両編成の500系車両で運転される「こだま」の車内に、お子さま向けにアレンジされた擬似運転台が設置されます。この運転台、ハンドルの操作により速度計やATC信号などが点灯し、自分で新幹線を運転しているような臨場感を楽しめるのだそうです。
「お子様向け運転台」が設置されるのは、8号車(新大阪寄り)客室のいちばん奥。500系の先頭は鋭く尖っていることで有名ですが、一方で、300系など他の形式と同程度の座席数を確保する必要がありギリギリまで座席を詰め込んだため、末端の車両の運転席側にはデッキがなく、客室が行き止まりになっています。今回はそのいちばん奥の壁面に運転台の写真を貼り、その前の座席2列を撤去して擬似運転台とソファが設置されるようです。
9月の5連休初日となる09/19(土)から「お子様向け運転台」を設置した1編成が運転を開始。5連休の間は朝から夜まで上下4本の「こだま」として1日あたり12時間39分間も走ります。時間はたっぷりありますが、仲良く譲り合ってお楽しみください。
なお、5連休以降の運転計画は後日発表予定、11月中旬までに計5編成に導入されるそうです。
当該列車の8号車(自由席)はきっと賑やかでしょうから、静かに新幹線の旅を楽しみたい方は他の車両へどうぞ。8両編成の500系「こだま」は、基本的に、6号車以外のすべての車両が自由席です。

- こだま730 博多06:14 → 新大阪11:05 (「お子様向け運転台」が前向き)
- こだま751 新大阪11:38 → 岡山13:01 (〃 後ろ向き)
- こだま750 岡山15:52 → 新大阪17:05 (〃 前向き)
- こだま769 新大阪17:38 → 博多22:50 (〃 後ろ向き)
※ 当日の運転状況などにより、「お子様向け運転台」を設置していない車両に変更となる場合があります。
JR West released that a kids' cockpit will be installed in the cabin of 8 cars' series 500. They said this cab has a speed meter and ATC signal board which light up with lever operations.
The child cockpit will be installed at the innermost part of car No. 8 cabin. The front cars of series 500 have no passenger doors behind their cockpits because they were required to contain seats as many as the other cars like series 300. Then the 2 rows of seats are removed and kids' cockpit is set in front of the innermost wall behind the real cockpit.
One set of series 500 with the kids' cockpit will start to run since September 19, the first day of the five-day weekend. The cars will run for 12 hours 39 minutes a day as 4 Kodama trains all day during the holidays.
And JR West said that they will release the schedule of after holidays on subsequent day and install the cockpit collectively in 5 sets of series 500 cars by mid-November.
