Peak days of 2018 Golden Week holidays travel, final guide

The Golden Week holidays are coming. According to JR Central, the train congestion peaks during coming Golden Week holidays (April 27, 2018 – May 6) will be May 3 for outbound trains and May 6 for inbound ones. The following data are from this site Shinkansen Timetable’s independent survey. The seat availability changes from moment to moment, but they may be of some help to find remained seats.

Seat availability around the expected peak days

We checked the actual seat availability data at the night on April 25 shown as follows. According to the actual seat availability data, outbound trains on May 3 and inbound ones on May 6 have relatively large numbers of reservation.

The charts shown below the indicate seat availability of around the peak days on Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. On the graphs, horizontal axes mean hours of departure from 6 to 24 and vertical the number of Nozomi, Mizuho, Hikari, Sakura and Tsubame trains. The bar of blue shows underoccupied trains, yellow near capacity and red full occupancy. So it may easy to book trains at the hours with stretching blue bar.
