JR companies released the outlines of new service schedule will be changed on March 4, 2017. On Tokaido Shinkansen, all regular service trains of Nozomi and Hikari will be operated with N700A typed cars and they run faster than before. Also on Sanyo Shinkansen, due to installation of new ATC system, train runs faster than before. On Kyushu Shinkansen which affected by Kumamoto Earthquake in April 2016, train runs as fast as before again.

The key points of the revise are as below.

  • All regular Nozomi and Hikari services are operated with N700A typed cars.
  • 28 Nozomi and 23 Hikari services run faster than before by three minutes between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.
  • New ATC system is installed and travel time and ride quality are improved on Sanyo Shinkansen.
  • Special Mizuho service will highly be available.
  • Kyushu Shinkansen service is completely recovered from Kumamoto Earthquake.
  • Through service between Sanyo Shinkansen and Kyushu Shinkansen is increased.
  • Connections between Mizuho and Tsubame are improved.
  • Sakura and Tsubame in commuter hours have more non-reservation cars.

All regular Nozomi and Hikari services are operated with N700A typed cars

Through addition of new cars and remodeling of existing ones since 2013, at the time of March 2017, JR Central and JR West will have 136 sets of N700A typed cars (111 sets of JR Central and 25 of JR West). So they can operate all regular Nozomi (164 services) and Hikari (65 services) with N700A typed cars. The number of N700A Kodama will be slightly increased.

After March 2017, 89% of regular service trains on Tokaido Shinkansen will be operated with comfortable and eco-friendly N700A typed cars.

28 Nozomi and 23 Hikari services run faster than before by three minutes between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka.

In the daytime, 26 Nozomi trains of XX:30 departing from Tokyo and XX:13 arriving at Tokyo runs faster by three minutes between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and by about six minutes between Tokyo and Hakata. These trains are traveling between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka for 2 hours 36 minutes now and they will travel for 2 hours 33 minutes on the new schedule.

Therefore, after March 2017, only one services per an hour will remain which travels longer than 2 hours 33 minutes between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka (traveling for 2 hours 37 minutes).

Nozomi 3 and Nozomi 206 in the early morning travels faster by three minutes.

About Hikari trains, 23 trains of XX:03 departing from Tokyo and XX:40 arriving at Tokyo run faster by three minutes between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, and by one to six minutes between Tokyo and Okayama.

New ATC system is installed and travel time and ride quality are improved on Sanyo Shinkansen.

New digital ATC system will be installed to Sanyo Shinkansen. It makes Nozomi and Mizuho travel faster by one minutes and Kodama by about 15 minutes in average. Further the fastest Nozomi 64’s schedule will be changed to 4 hours 46 minutes, one minutes shorter than now. The new ATC system reduce a train’s speed smoothly, so the ride quality will be improved.

Special Mizuho service will highly be available.

In addition to the 12 regular service of Mizuho, four special service will frequently be provided. Therefore about 16 Mizuho services a day are available.

Kyushu Shinkansen service is completely recovered from Kumamoto Earthquake.

Due to the earthquake in Kumamoto occured in this April, Kyushu Shinkansen’s trains reduced speed between Kumamoto and Shin-Yatsushiro. The recovery work will be completed by March 2017 and trains will be able to run faster by five minutes than now. The new travel time as same as that of before the earthquake.

Through service between Sanyo Shinkansen and Kyushu Shinkansen is increased.

The travel time will be shorten between Sanyo Shinkansen and Kyushu Shinkansen by combining two separately operated trains to one through train. By combining Kodama 821 and Sakura 405, the travel time will be shorter by about 30 minutes from Hiroshima. By combining Nozomi 55 (Shin-Osaka – Hakata) and Tsubame 357, the travel time will be shorter by about 20 minutes from Shin-Osaka.

Connections between Mizuho and Tsubame are improved.

Tsubame 353’s departing time at Kumamoto will be changed from 22:40 to 23:00. Then, Mizuho 611 connects with Tsubame 353 and passengers to Shin-Yatsushiro to Sendai will be able to stay longer at Shin-Osaka and Hakata.
